Alistair Pereira's bail plea rejected
Mumbai, Nov 23 (UNI) A local court here today rejected the bail plea of 21-year-old Alistair Anthony Pereira, whose car had allegedly mowed to death seven pavement dwellers on Carter Road in Bandra on November 12.
The plea of Pereira, son of a city businessman, came up before sessions judge A T Amlekar today.
The defence counsel, while praying for the bail, contended that his client had neither the knowledge nor the intention to commit the crime and, so, section 304 A of the Indian Penal Code, pertaining to rash and negligent driving, should apply in this case.
The defence also cited the case of actor Salman Khan, who was also involved in a similar accident, while praying for the bail.
Being a young man, pereira's entire career will be jeopardised if he continued to be in custody for more time, the defence argued.
However, the judge rejected the bail plea.
In the early hours of November 12, Alistair's Toyato Corolla ran over 15 construction workers sleeping in front of a temporary shed on Carter road. Seven persons were killed and the rest seriously injured.
