3 US Marines killed in Iraq's Anbar province

BAGHDAD, Nov 23: Three US Marines died yesterday from wounds sustained in combat in Iraq's volatile western Anbar province, the US military said today.

The military's statement gave no details of the fighting.

Anbar is the heartland of a three-year-old Sunni Arab insurgency and is the deadliest place in Iraq for US soldiers.

The guerrillas are fighting the Shi'ite-led Iraqi government and US-led forces.

The deaths brought to 2,871 the number of US soldiers killed in Iraq since US-led forces invaded in March 2003 to topple Saddam Hussein.
