Lucknow, Nov 22: The Uttar Pradesh government has extended by six months the term of the Justice O P Garg committee, which is investigating the cause of a major fire at the Brand India Consumer Fair in Meerut on April 10, 2006.

At least 40 people were killed and more than 60 sustained burn injuries in the incident.

State home department sources said the tenure of the Justice Garg Committee was to expire on December 5, but it has been given an extension for another six months.

The state government had appointed former Justice of Allahabad High Court O P Garg as a one-man inquiry committee on June 2 to probe the cause of fire in the Fair.

Justice Garg, however, joined the committee on June 5.
