1 shot dead in encounter near order

Aizawl, Nov 22: Mizoram police shot dead a man in Mizoram-Asom border last evening, who was allegedly involved in highway robbery.

Kolasib Additional SP Lalremmuana said the victim who was identified as Kavir, was shot on the hip and another person identified as Rahim Uddin (28) was arrested.

According to him, Vairengte police carried out the operation following the tips that a group of non-Mizos have entered Chhimluang village along the Aizawl-Silchar highway.

After a day long search police was challenged by the group near the forest along the highway and Kavir was shot dead in retaliatory fire while police managed to arrest one of them, he said.

Lalremmuana added that two country made guns along with a toy AK 47 rifle was recovered from the spot. The group has been operating on the Asom-Mizoram border robbing and looting passengers travelling on the national highway.

Meanwhile, Mizoram police seized a bundle of fake Indian currency notes of Rs 500 denomination amounting Rs 95,000 from Champai district of the state, along the Indo-Myanmar border yesterday.
