Five injured in jail scuffle

Agartala, Nov 22: A scuffle inside Central jail between the inmates and prison staff left five people injured, one seriously, here today.

According to a top police official, the incident occurred when the prison staff were distributing breakfast to the inmates. The jail inmates were on hunger strike since Monday demanding better quality of food and living conditions. They had been alleging that unhygienic food was being distributed among the prisoners for the last couple of months.

The inmates attacked the prison staff with lethal weapons and a major scuffle began between the staff and the inmates resulting in injuries to five people, one among them seriously.

Soon after the incident, jail authorities raised the alarm and rushed to the spot. High police officials, including Inspector General of Police (IGP) prisons, Mr K L Bal rushed to the spot with reinforcement and brought the situation under control.

The officials hold a meeting with the prisoners soon after the scuffle for an amicable solution.
