10 polio cases in Gorakhpur, Basti divisions

Siddharthnagar, Nov 22 (UNI) As many as ten fresh cases of Polio have come to light in Gorakhpur and Basti divisions of Eastern Uttar Pradesh in the last fortnight.

Talking to UNI here today, Joint Director of Health Dr Umakant Prasad said Basti area accounted for five patients, Siddharthnagar four, while one patient hailed from Deoria district of Gorakhpur division.

The government had undertaken a massive vaccination drive against Polio. However, the efficacy and penetration of the drive has come under a cloud with mounting cases of this disease.

Polio affects the central nervous system and causes temporary or permanent paralysis, that is, loss of control or feeling in most parts of the body.
