Two policemen hurt in violence over Shivaji photo

Bidar, Nov 21 (UNI) Two policemen, including a Sub-inspector, were injured and two vehicles were set on fire by an irate mob over removal of Shivaji's photo in Mehaker village of Bhalki taluq in this district today.

Police said the trouble started when some villagers put up a Shivaji photo at a road corner without permission. Following objection from a section of people, Tahasildar of Bhalki, M Manikappa, along with some police personnel, went to the village and tried to remove the photo.

Thereupon a 500 strong mob started pelting stones on the officials, injuring Sub-inspector Adivappa Banni and constable Ashok Raju. The officials and the police had to flee towards a police post to escape the fury of the enraged mob.

The group then set on fire Tahasindar's jeep and a KSRTC bus, after asking passengers to alight. Additional police force was rushed from Humnabad to maintain order. The situation was now under control.

Police, however, said that no one had been arrested so far in connection with the incident.
