Samajwadi Party's MP Abu Asim Azmi held
Mumbai, Nov 21 (UNI) Samajwadi Party MP Abu Asim Azmi was among scores of the party activists who were today detained by police across the city in a bid to prevent the party from organising a rally at Shivaji Park in central Mumbai.
Confirming the detention of Mr Azmi, party's city unit general secretary Shyam Sunder Arya told UNI that the MP was held by police at Naigaon when he along with the party activists were marching towards Shivaji Park.
Mr Arya, when contacted on his mobile phone, said he himself was in police custody, adding he was picked up from Shivaji Park area.
He claimed that about 1,000 activists of the party had been rounded up by the police from different parts of the city to thwart the rally.
The Samajwadi Party, after denied permission to hold the rally by the police, had decided to go ahead with it notwithstanding promulgation of prohibitory orders.
