NCP sweeps in Tasgaon election
Sangli, Nov 20 (UNI) The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) today swept the municipal council elections in state Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil's home town Tasgaon in the district, winning 16 seats out of the total 19.
NCP-led Mr Patil group snatched the power from the Congress, led by Sanjay Patil, who is a traditional rival of Mr Patil. Congress secured just three seats.
The elections to the three municipal councils -- Tasgaon, Islampur and Vithe in the district -- were held yesterday and counting took place today.
The three municipal councils have total 64 seats for which as many as 185 candidates were in the fray, Sangli district election branch sources said.
In Islampur council, NCP group, led by state Finance Minister Jayant Patil, won 19 out of the total 26 seats, while Congress, BJP and SS got five each and two went to independent candidates.
In Vithe municipal council, Congress won 15 seats from total 23 seats, while NCP seven and one by independent.
In Aste municipal council, the NCP had earlier won the election unopposed.
