Costs imposed on Pondy French Club

Chennai, Nov 21 (UNI) Madras High Court today imposed punitive costs of Rs 25,000 on the French City Sports and Recreation Club, Puducherry, which approached the court with a plea to restrain police from interfering with its smooth functioning.

Mr Justice M E N Patrudu, dismissing a petition from the club, said the club was seeking to restrain police from doing their duty.

The judge also directed police to proceed against the club if it was indulging in any illegal activities.

According to the petitioner, the club was providing indoor and outdoor games like chess, carrom and cards and its members were leading personalities and celebrities from all walks of life. Police were raiding the club frequently and disturbing its activities.

Police however said gambling and betting were being organised in the club. So, they raided the club on various occasions.
