Twin strike cripples life in Manipur

Imphal, Nov 20 (UNI) A twin strike which began today affected life here in Manipur.

A 36-hour general strike called by Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF) began here at 0600 hrs today. It will continue till 1800 hrs tomorrow. The student body had called the strike to protest the arrest of five its members by police for alleged involvement in a stir demanding proper academic calendar in the state.

Meanwhile, the Joint Action Committee against the killing of Ningthoujam Binoy by police after being released from jail earlier on November 13 last had also called a 48-hour general strike.

Large number of strike supporters blocked streets with woods, burnt tyres and poured oil on the road. A 50-year-old woman today died in an accident when a vehicle overturned at Tiddim road, Imphal. Police said the vehicle skidded off the road and the woman who was in that vehicle sustained head injuries and later died.

In a separate incident today a bomb was found at Naoremthong, Imphal near the main road. A police team removed it after the matter was reported to the police.

The MSF, meanwhile, has also decided to boycott the Congress led Secular Progressive Front government in Manipur as a mark of protest.

All inter state bus services was cancelled due to the stir and streets were turned into playgrounds for kids. The market places wore a deserted look. All educational establishments were also closed down.

The Working Committee of the Apunba Lup, All Manipur United Clubs' Organisation (AMUCO), University Students' Union (MUSU), and large numbers of organisations also supported the strike.
