Bangalore, Nov 20 (UNI) India's annual premier Free and Open Source Software event FOSS.IN will be held at the National Science Symposium Centre here from November 24 to 26.

The event, celebrating its eighth anniversary, was originally known as Linux Bangalore. Last year, it was repositioned as FOSS.IN to address the wider scope of free and open source software.

FOSS referred to technologies whereby the source code of software was freely distributed to the world. Licensed to be freely used and modified, Free and Open Source Software was getting extremely popular in India.

During the event, talks, seminars and discussions (BOFs) were being organised and FOSS enthusiasts were gathering in Bangalore from across the world. An expo was also being concurrently organised to showcase the open source world, its people and technologies. The event covered technical discussions on FOSS technology to the socio-economic impact of FOSS in India and globally.

The event was non-commercial in nature and run by enthusiasts and volunteers from the FOSS world. It was funded by industry, Government and academia. The primary sponsors of the event were the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Sun Microsystems, Geodesic Information Systems, Google and Directi.

db4objects, ABB, Wipro, Spikesource, CDAC and NRC-FOSS were also sponsors of the event.
