Khadi going trendy in Rajasthan

Jaipur, Nov 19 (UNI) A galaxy of models and celebrities descended here to prove that 'Khadi' could be as contemporary and trendy as any other fabrics at a fashion show for khadi clothes designed by internationally acclaimed Bengladesh born fashion designer Bibi Russell, last night.

Named ''Renaissance Wave'' the show held at the majestic Ramgarh Palace Hotel give a perfect back drop to the gala event with the accompnaiment of live Rajasthani music. Socialite and writer Shoba De, Parmeshwari Godrej, fashion designer Rohit Bal, film director Ahsutosh Gavarikar, Bollywood sensation Hrithik Roshan were among the celebrities present. Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje along with a host of ministers were present on the occasion.

Bibi Russell has been working with the spinners and weavers of Rajasthan for quite some time. She has created over 500 different fabrics with raw meterials sourced from Rajasthan as part of a 'contemporary handloom collection'.

''The endeavour is to make fashion a movement giving artisans and the handloom industry a contemporary edge and preserving a priceless legecy'', said Bibi Russell.

Shoba De while introducing Ms Russell summed up the philosophy behind the fashion show. ''Fashion is not display of personel vanity but an expression of social responsibility''.

Bibi Russell said her efforts is to not only revive the khadi as movement which symbolises self respect with a contemporary look but to bridge the gap between poverty and economic developemnt of the countless weavers employed in this sector''.

However, if seems all are not happy with the endevour.

''Such events may help in creating market with crores to be spent for advertisement. It will push up the cost of Khadi beyond the reach of ordinary people'' opined Rameshwar Vidyarthi, a Gandhian.
