TDP criticises Govt for weavers cheque bounce

Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, Nov 18 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Government cheques totalling Rs 171 lakh in favour of flood-hit weavers in Prakasam district had bounced, according to Telugu Desam Party(TDP).

Talking to newspersons here today, former State Minister N Krishnappa, former Union Minister U Venkateswarlu and District TDP President P Pulla Rao, said the Government has provided relief at the rate of Rs 1000 per handloom damaged in the floods.

They said the Government identified about 70,000 weavers for the purpose in Chirala at Prakasam district and issued cheques on November six. However, when the victims presented the cheques, the bank declined to honour them for want of funds.

Prof Venkateswarlu said the dishonour of Government cheques is an offence under the Negotiable Instruments Act.

Mr Krishannappa alleged that the Government relief is a pittance.
