CM hopes to settle Mullaperiyar issue in Delhi

Idukki, Nov 18: Conerned over the safety of the century-old Muallaperiyar dam following rise in the water level beyond the safety mark of 136 feet, Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan today visited the dam along with members of the Cabinet subcommittee.

Talking to the media at Kumily after visiting the dam, Mr Achuthadanadan expressed the hope that a solution to the Mullaperiyar issue could be found at talks with Tamil Nadu to be held in the presence of the concerned Union Minister in Delhi on November 29.

The talks in Delhi is in response to a Supreme Court directive to settle the vexed issue through negotiations between the two states in the presence of the Centre.

Braving heavy rain, Mr Achuthanandan visited the dam along with Cabinet sub-committee members Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, K P Rajendran, N K Premachandran and T U Kuruvila in the morning.

Meanwhile, water level in the Mullaperiyar reservoir stood at 138.02 feet today.

The Kerala Government has also convened an all-party meeting at Thiruvananthapuram on November 20 to discuss the issue.
