2706 unprotected monuments in Orissa

Bhubaneswar, Nov 18 (UNI) Orissa has as many as 2706 unprotected monuments as per the survey conducted by INTACH, Minister of Culture S N Patra told the state assembly today.

Replying to the question of Pradeep Kumar Amat,the Minister said the State Archaeological Department(SAD) has declared 218 monuments as protected.

Among the unprotected monuments,the undivided Puri district has the highest 683 unprotected monuments followed by 583 in undivided Ganjam district and 430 in Cuttack district.

According to the survey Phulbani district has the lowest 41 unprotected monuments.

Mr.Patra said the state government has proposed to spend Rs.1.5 crores from the 10th Finance Commission grant to undertake restoration and conservation work of 46 monuments.They included 19 protected monuments and 27 unprotected monuments.
