Winter session of West Bengal assembly begins

Kolkata, Nov 17: A brief winter session of the West Bengal Legislative assembly which began here today was adjourned after making obituary references to 22 eminent personalities who died during the past six months.

As the House assembled for the day with all the 294 members, Speaker Hasim Abdul Halim stood up and made obituary references to the 22 eminent people.

A two minute silence was observed in memory of the departed souls. Later the Speaker announced the customary adjournment of the house for the day.

The House, which would be in session till November 30 to discuss 13 bills, would reassemble again on Monday.

Among the renowned personalities whose obituary references were made today were former Union minister Phulrenu Guha,former state minister Birendra Kumar Moitra, MLA Md Faruque,former Rajya Sabha member Ahmed Hossain Mondal,former MLAs Banamali Das,Kamal Krishna Bhattacharya and Nandalal Banerjee,Shahnai maestro Ustad Bismillah Khan, writer Pratibha Basu, sculptors Somnath Hore and Shakya Chowdhury, film maker Hrishikesh Mukherjee, physician Sital Ghosh, footballer Sudip Chatterjee and former cricker Poly Umrigar.
