TANUVAS to sign MoU with Michigan University
Tiruchirapalli, Nov 17 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS) would shortly sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the College of Veterinary Medicine, Michigan State University, US, enabling TANUVAS students to receive training in veterinary medicine and surgery.
Disclosing this to media here yesterday, TANUVAS vice-chancellor N Balaraman said TANUVAS had trained 20 students of Michigan State University annually for the past four years, as part of an earlier agreement. Under the new MoU, five students of TANUVAS and two faculty members would be sent to Michigan every year to study veterinary medicine and surgery.
Similarly, TANUVAS would sign an MoU with the Virginia Tech University, Maryland, to take up research on animal biotechnology and infectious animal diseases, under the Indo-US knowledge initiation programme.
TANUVAS would start two certificate courses on Artificial Insemination (AI) and laboratory technician for students who had completed graduation and tenth standard, respectively.
Dr Balaraman said the Agro-Forestry scheme being implemented by TANUVAS in 40 villages in Perambalur district on 500 hectare land was successful. The scheme was to reclaim unused land with livestock integration. A sum of Rs 24.55 lakh was allotted for the scheme and over 1.1 lakh trees including Mango, Tamarind, Teak and fruit bearing trees were planted.
The varsity had sought the permission of the land resources department to extend the agro-forestry scheme till March 2007, as the project period (2001-2006) would be over by the year end. The scheme was being implemented on a trial basis with funding from the Union Ministry for Rural Development and had benefited over 202 villagers by generating assured income, he added.
