Police chiefs to deliberate on terror and police reforms

New Delhi, Nov 17 (UNI) Terrorism, cross border infiltration, Mumbai and Malegaon blasts and police reforms are likely to be the focus of the three-day conference of Director General of Police and Inspector General of Police being organised here from November 22.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would present the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service and address on November 23, the annual conference being organised by the Intelligence Bureau. Home Minister Shivraj Patil would inaugurate the conference and present Indian Police Medal for Meritorious services.

The conference would deliberate on issues pertaining to national security, left wing extremism, naxalism, security of critical infrastructure, security situation in the North East, Counter terrorism doctrine, organised crime, FDI and national security, police media relations, disaster management, management of international borders and VIP security.

The main objective of the conference is to provide a forum to the police leadership in the country to discuss various problems being faced by the force in their day-to-day functioning, work out solutions to such problems by exchange of ideas and sharing of experiences among the senior echelons and thereby make the police more effective, efficient and people- friendly.

The Conference, whose ex-officio chairman is the Director IB, would make efforts to devise ways and means for the police force to confront the ever-increasing and newer challenges to law and order and national security including terorirsm, insurgency, extremism and espionage.

Sharing of ideas and caring for each other's problems also generate greater bonding and camaraderie among the various police forces in the country.

The conference provides an opportunity to the law enforcing agencies to brief the Prime Minister during an interactive session on some sensitive issues affecting the country. The delegates of the Conference also call on President A P J Abdul Kalam. The first such confrence of IGPs was held in 1920 by IB and in the post Independence era it was first held in 1950 and was inaugurated by the then Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
