Convoy hijacked near Kuwait border: Iraq

BASRA, Iraq, Nov 17: Four Americans and an Austrian were among 14 people kidnapped yesterday when a civilian convoy was hijacked in Iraq close to the Kuwaiti border, an Iraqi security source said today.

Some of the nine Iraqis among those abducted had been released after the incident near Safwan, 50 km south of Basra, he said. The convoy was headed for Nassiriya, further north. US military officials earlier said the hijack took place near Nassiriya but police in that city said it happened outside their jurisdiction.
