Tax evasion of more than Rs 25 crore detected in Surat district

Surat, Nov 16 (UNI) The Surat Income Tax office has detected tax evasion of more than Rs 25 crore by prominent builders, IT sources said here today.

In the raid conducted since yesterday, by as many as 200 IT officials on the offices and houses of prominent businessmen and professionals at around 42 locations including Bardoli, Vyara and Surat city, they have recovered hard cash and documents including hard disks and CDs from the offices and houses of prominent builders.

A preliminary assessment suggests a tax evasion of more than Rs 25 crore, the sources said.

Even though the raids are largely concentrated on the houses of builders in Bardoli and Vyara, some prominent businessmen and professionals like tax consultants and lawyers are also being targetted in the city, sources said.

The IT department said they were concentrating mainly on the real estate business which has been flourishing in Vyara and Bardoli for some time.
