Sensex closes at a new high of 13,505
Mumbai, Nov 16 (UNI) The Sensex today spurted to a new record of 13,505 in the Bombay Stock Exchange(BSE) with modest gains of 36.52 points from it's previous close of 13,469.37 on sustained bull support from Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs).
For the sixth consecutive session, the Sensex has been touching new peaks as buying continued at record levels, brokers said.
The Sensex finished 36.52 points (0.27 per cent) ahead, at 13,505.89. It surged to a new high of 13,588.01, its low being 13,459.28, witnessing a swing of close to 129 points for the day in the highly volatile session, before it opened high at 13,500.70.
The BSE BANKEX Index shot up smartly by 152.15 points to close at 7212.38 while BSE Dollex-30 and BSE Dollex-100 Indices also rose modestly by 16.24 points and 8.43 points respectively and was quoted at 2456.97 for BSE Dollex-30 index and for BSE Dollex index at 1570.91.
But BSE Auto index crashed steeply by 55.60 points to close at 5271.75 while BSE METAL and HC indices also eased slightly by 37.31 points and 29.91 points respectively and closed at 8934.90 for BSE METAL Index and for BSE HC Index at 3776.38.
The S&P CNX Nifty of National Stock Exchange (NSE) remained unchanged at 3,876.85, from its previous close, before it resumed flat at 3,876.40. The Nifty recorded a new high of 3,900.40 during the intra- day session. But it came down at 3,863.85 during the mid-session.
The market-breadth, positive for the first half of the day, turned negative as selling started in smallcap and midcap stocks. On BSE, 1,537 shares declined, while only 1,009 advanced and as many as 62 scrips remained unchanged.
The total turnover on BSE exceeded Rs 6,000 crore, at Rs 6,110, boosted by two huge deals of 25.03 lakh shares each in Gujarat Ambuja Cements counter, at an average Rs 138.75 per share. As per market sources, Swiss cement maker Holcim, which presently holds 15.6 per cent of Indian cement maker Gujarat Ambuja Cements, acquired additional 3.6 per cent stake from the promoter group.
Hang Seng index rose 0.32 per cent (61.07 points), to 19,154.07.
US stocks rose as a proposed airline merger lifted airline shares and after positive broker comments sparked a surge in Google Inc's shares.
The Dow Jones industrial average gained 33.70 points, or 0.28 per cent, to end at a record of 12,251.71.
The Nasdaq Composite Index rose 12.09 points, or 0.50 per cent, to close at 2,442.75.
