Govt. doubles Kabir Puraskar purse

New Delhi, Nov 16 (UNI) The government today doubled the cash prize of the Kabir Puraskar, bestowed on citizens who save lives during communal riots, to Rs 200,000.

The Union Cabinet approved the increase in the Kabir Puraskar purse in various categories from Rs 50,000 to Rs 100,000.

The awards in three categories will now be worth Rs 200,000, Rs 100,000 and Rs 50,000 from the existing Rs 100,000, Rs 50,000 and Rs 25,000.

The enhancement of cash award will honour such citizens who come forward in saving lives and property during communal riots, caste conflicts and ethnic clashes, cabinet spokesman Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi said.

Instituted in 1990, one of the winners of the award this year was a man who rescued some Muslim women from attackers in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh. Ram Babu Singh saw the women to safety despite sustaining injuries.
