Chamling wants journalists to write positively
Gangtok, Nov 16 (UNI) Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Chamling today appealed to news persons to write positively, impartially and with responsbility.
Addressing newsmen on the Press day, organised by the state Information and Public Relations Department, the Chief Minister said journalists should assess the impact of their story on the society and the people before filing their report.
Mr Chamling said his government was committed to upholding the freedom of the press but journalists should not misuse the power of their pen as misuse of freedom of press often took democracy on the back track.
He announced to set up a well equipped modern media centre here.
The process for the acquistion of land for the proposed centre was on and the construction work for the centre was likely to start in April next.
The Chief Minister honoured six journalists on the occasion.
Replying to the demands of the different media organisations like Sikkim Press Club President C D Rai, Sikkim Press Association President Ganga Bahadur Rai and Mahila Patrakar Sangh President Radhika Pradhan, he said the state had its own limitations.
However, within the limited resources his government would try to do whatever was possible.
Among other things the media organisations had demanded a permanent building for the Press Club, medical facilities and official accommodation for the media persons.
