Arunachal to have municipal bodies soon

Itanagar, Nov 16: Arunachal Pradesh which has no municipal body is all set to have local-self-governance soon.

The draft proposal for creation of municipal bodies and urban local self government for Itanagar and Naharlagun was under preparation, which would be placed in the next session of assembly to make it an act, state Housing and Urban Development Minister Nabam Tuki informed UNI here today.

He said, elections would be held for the bodies after the proposal was converted into an act in the assembly.

At present interim arrangements have been made for implementation of Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) through state urban development agency (SUDA) and district urban development agency (DUDA) with members representing from various developmental departments, he said. With the constitution of municipal bodies the state government would be able to properly monitor all the schemes under city development plan (CDP) more efficiently, he added.

Mr Tuki informed that he would be leaving for Hyderabad today to participate in the two-day housing ministers' conference on housing and human settlement beginning from November 17 next. The conference to be inaugurated by Kumari Selja, Minister of State (Independent charge) for Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, would finalise the national urban housing policy for successful implementation of the JNNURM, he informed adding, various topics related to housing and urban settlement would be also discussed during the conference.
