10-day economic blockade against Tipaimukh dam
Imphal, Nov 16 (UNI) The Action Committee against Tipaimukh dam (ACTIP), has called for a ten- day economic blockade at the two highways in Manipur from tonight till November 25 midnight.
About 29 organisations including the United Naga Council (UNC) and Naga People Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) have decided to go for a mass agitation to save Barak river and the 13,161 sq km of land, which would be submerged during the dam's construction.
The ACTIP had also warned to intensify the stir if the government continues to take up the construction works.
Meanwhile they have appealed to the people here to bear the problems that might incur during the strike.
State Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh had already announced that the government would go ahead with this project of North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) and that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would be laying the foundation stone.
The two National Highways 39 and 53 are the life line of the state and the ten day blockade here would severely affect the trade and transport services, sources said.
