Queen Elizabeth to visit US for Jamestown anniversary

WASHINGTON, Nov 15 (Reuters) Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip of Britain will make a state visit to the United States in May to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Jamestown Settlement.

''The United States and the United Kingdom enjoy an extraordinary friendship that is sustained by deep historical and cultural ties and a commitment to defend freedom around the world,'' President George W Bush said in a statement today.

''We look forward to Her Majesty's State Visit as an occasion to celebrate these enduring bonds,'' he said.

The Queen's visit next year will mark the anniversary of the Jamestown Settlement, where America's first permanent English colonists lived on the banks of the James River in Virginia.
