Petition against RS members' election dismissed

Bangalore, Nov 15 (UNI) The Karnataka High Court today dismissed an election petition filed by Aland Legislator B R Patil, challenging the election of Messrs Rajeev Chandrashekar, Rajashekaramurthy, K Rahman Khan and K B Sharanappa to the Rajya Sabha from the State.

Mr Justice K L Manjunath dismissed the petition after a detailed hearing, holding that there was no issue that could be tried.

The petitioner had submitted that there were 12 Rajya Sabha seats from the State, of which four had fallen vacant. The leaders had exerted influence on the voting Legislators by issuing whip, he contended, seeking for a declaration that the election was void and in violative of the provisions of the Representation of Peoples Act and the Rules regarding secrecy of ballot papers.

The respondents had filed applications, seeking dismissal of the election petition on various grounds.
