We can also produce Tiger Woods in near future: Jaitha

Pune, Nov 14 (UNI) Newly elected Poona Club President Manish Jaitha today said the city had budding talent to produce champion golfers.

''We have the capacity and the infra-structural facilities to produce golfers like the world famous Tiger Woods,'' Jaitha told reporters here.

Coming at the helm of affairs as the Golf Captain of the Poona Club, the veteran golfer Manish has played the game for the last 27 years and attained a significant position in the annals of Pune golfing.

The club has made a beginning as about 90 youngsters have been put through their paces under expert coaches for the past six months and the results would be evident in a short time, Manish pointed out.

He has taken over the reins from Anil Seolekar, who had the distinction of heading as the Captain for the past four years. ''I know the task is not only difficult but would take a lot of efforts to cherish my dreams,'' he said.

The most important aspect that separates Manish from others is that he not only has the expertise but also belongs to the family of golfers. It is unique that his father Mr Rajnikant Jaitha, who figured and helped the Club in past in hosting the two national championships, was the pillar of strength for golf as well.

Manish pointed out that the untreated water from Mulla river that was pumped to keep the par 71 course green, has created problems.

''We have difficulties in using the untreated water to keep the course green but it creates lot of weeds and it is a problem. We are trying to put a filtration plant to procure clean water to get rid of the weeds,'' said Manish.

Manish said they managed to attract 77 of the 90 children in the promotion of golf. They are going through their paces which was very encouraging in their quest of making champions, the new golf captain said.
