Noted Socialist leader Mohan Dharia on indefinite fast

Pune, Nov 14 (UNI) Noted Socialist leader Mohan Dharia began an indefinite fast here today demanding immediate waiver of loans and accruing interest of farmers owning less than 2 hectares of land.

Mr Dharia commenced his fast at 'Vanrai' office here at 1000 hrs to support the debt-ridden farmers in background of the large number of suicides taking place in the state.

He demanded that facilities be given to farmers in drought prone areas irrespective of the size of their farm lands. Another demand includes that money lenders giving loans to farmers at high interest rests be declared 'illegal' and police protection given to such farmers. The rate of interest on loans given to farmers be reduced to 4 per cent, he said.

The former Union Minister first paid homage at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in the Aga Khan Palace before commencing his fast in the presence of several farmers, local leaders and mediapersons. He has appealed to all farmers and supporters to take up the issue with the competent authority at district levels and demonstrate in a peaceful manner.
