Kerala Governor launches state's first 'Diabetes Helpline'
Kochi, Nov 14 (UNI) Stressing the need for people to adopt a healthy lifestyle, Kerala Govenor R L Bhatia today launched the state's first helpline for diabetes patients.
Inaugurating the valedictory function of the three-day 'Diafest 2006' organised by the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) here, Mr Bhatia observed that the WHO theme for the 'World Diabetes Day', observed on November 14 every year, was 'Diabetes Care for Everyone'.
The helpline for diabetics, described by AIMS as the first in the state, will be functional from 0830 to 1730 hrs., from Mondays to Saturdays. The number of the helpline is 9895811011 Stressing the need for a proper awareness programme to help prevent Diabetes, the Governor said, ''I am told by experts that it is a disease that can be prevented, and in most cases reversed. If we fail to prevent or cure diabetes with sensible nutrition, proper medication and systematic exercise, it may lead to grave disorders and graver ailments.'' Underlining the need to educate and motivate people on healthy lifestyles, he said that the efficacy of period check-ups coupled with medical intervention should be driven home at all levels.
On the occasion, the Governor also released three books on Diabetes, brought out by the Endocrinology Department of AIMS, including a book of recipes for diabetics, based on Kerala cuisine.
The three-day 'Diafest 2006' included documentary screenings and exhibitions, competitions for medical students and awareness classes for general public.
