Veteran Marxist leader Jyoti Basu hurt in a fall

Kolkata, Nov 14: Veteran Marxist leader and former West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu was hurt after a fall at his residence late last night.

Doctors, attending on the nonagenarian leader advised him an X-Ray and complete rest.

"Apparently there is no fracture in the bones and there is nothing of much concern. But he has been asked to be in bed," Mr Basu's Confidential Assistant Jaikrishna Ghosh told sources.

He said an X-Ray would be done tomorrow.

The incident occurred when Mr Basu tripped on to the floor while going to the bathroom in his Indira Bhavan residence at Salt Lake.

He was injured in the waist, the same area he had hurt in a similar incident few months ago, Mr Ghosh said.

A Polit Bureau member of the CPI(M), Mr Basu completed 93 years on July one. Though he has been keeping an indifferent health for quite some time, he is still available for party meetings and public rallies. He, however, did not attend the ongoing Polit Bureau meeting being held in Delhi.
