Former BSF Asst Commandant makes immolation bid near PHQ, critical

New Delhi, Nov 14 (UNI) A former Assistant Commandant of the Border Security Force is in a critical condition after he made an immolation bid near the police headquarters at the busy ITO crossing in Central Delhi this afternoon.

Shashi Kumar Shukla, 45, a former Assistant Commandant with the BSF, doused himself at the ITO crossing, yards away from the high security Police headquarters Building, at about 1230 hrs and ran towards the PHQ gate, according to sources.

After he fell near the gate, he was taken to the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital by the police personnel where his condition is said to be critical.

Police said he sustained 90 per cent burn injuries and was not fit to make a statement.

A resident of DDA Flats in Hastsal, near Uttam Nagar in West Delhi, Shashi had taken voluntary retirement from the BSF some time back.

Investigations revealed that he had a dispute with his neighbour over some construction work he wanted to carry out and had lodged a complaint two days back.

He was later arrested for shouting at the police for not taking any action and let off the next day after being fined.

Further inquiry was on, the police added.
