Violence in BHU campus, 20 injured

Varanasi, Nov 13 (UNI) At least 20 people, including five security personnel, were injured when agitating local chemists clashed with Banaras Hindu University proctorial board personnel in the BHU campus here today.

Police said the chemists, protesting the opening of medical shop on the varsity premises, entered the campus in large numbers to meet Vice Chancellor Panjab Singh this afternoon.

When they were not allowed to proceed further by the BHU proctorial board, the agitating chemists staged a 'dharna' near the Mahila Mahavidyalaya crossing.

Seeing them block the road, security personnel used force to clear the demonstration in which 15 chemists were injured.

In retaliation, the chemists also indulged in stone-pelting which led to injuries of five security personnel, BHU proctorial board office said.

Meanwhile, leader of the agitating chemists Dinesh Tiwari alleged over 20 chemists were injured in the lathicharge by university securitymen, including state level leaders Diwakar Singh and Suresh Gupta. The injured were being treated at the district hospital.
