Under-7 national chess meet in Goa from Nov 14

Panaji, Nov 13 (UNI) The World Under-8 Chess Champion Goa's Ivana Furtado, Indian Grand Master Dibyendu Barua's son Dishan, Maharastra's Tejaswini Sagar and Tamil Nadu's C K Varsha will be among the 141 Under-seven chess players who would vie for honours in the XXTH National Under-seven (boys and girls) Chess championship which gets underway here tomorrow.

The championship is being organised by the Goa State Chess Association (GSCA) under the auspices of the All India Chess Federation (AICF). It will be officially inaugurated tomorrow but the actual championship will commmence from November 15.

GSCA secretary Suhas Asnodkar and AICF vice president Sameer Salgaocar, who is also the State Chess Association president, told reporters here today that so far 141 boys from 22 states 66 girls from 16 states have confirmed their participation.

The biggest contingent is from Maharashtra with 35 players, followed by Tamil Nadu (29), Goa (25), Karnataka (21), Andhra Pradesh (20), Orissa (11), Gujarat (9), West Bengal and Delhi (8) each, Chadigarh and Bihar (5) each, Assam, Pondicherry and Haryana (4) each, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Rajasthan, and Chattisgarh (3) each, UP, Manipur, Jharkhand (2) each and one from Punjab.

Mr Asnodkar said 11 rounds will be played under Fide-approved rules. The Fide Swiss rules will be followed for pairing. In case of a tie, the latest tie-breaking rules will be applied. Mr Murali Mohan from Chennai will be the chief arbiter.
