LONDON, Nov 13 (Reuters) Following are some of the major events to have occurred on November 14 since 1900: 1918 - Jozef Pilsudski was elected the first president of an independent Poland.
1963 - An undersea volcanic eruption created an island called Surtsey off Iceland's coast.
1979 - US President Jimmy Carter froze Iranian government assets held in American banks following the seizure of the US embassy in Tehran.
1988 - The Palestinian National Council endorsed UN Resolution 242, implicitly recognising Israel, agreeing to make it the basis for an international Middle East peace conference.
1991 - Prince Norodom Sihanouk of Cambodia made a triumphal return home after 13 years in exile.
1994 - The first fare-paying passengers travelled through the Channel Tunnel linking England and France.
2002 - Chinese Communist Party chief Jiang Zemin ushered in a new generation of leaders under Hu Jintao in the first orderly succession since the party took power in 1949.
2003 - Corsican nationalists announced a surprise truce saying they wanted to strengthen efforts to end 30 years of violence on the unruly French-run Mediterranean island.
