Nine farmers commit suicide in Vidarbha

Nagpur, Nov 13 (UNI) As many as nine debt-ridden farmers, including a woman, committed suicide in Vidarbha in the last two days, according to Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti (VJAS).

According to VJAS, a voluntary organisation working among farmers in the region, the nine who ended their lives, included four from Akola district, two from Amravati and one each from Wardha, Gondia and Nagpur districts. Among them was Subhadra Sahebrao Raut of village Pimpalgaon in Nagpur district, VJAS said.

This has taken the number of farmers who have committed suicide since June last year to 1,092, VJAS said in a release here today.

The release said 46 farmers have committed suicide in the first 12 days of November, an average of almost four every day.

Meanwhile, graduates in agriculture science will observe a day-long fast here tomorrow to express sympathy with the farmers of Vidarbha.

Indian Agricos Association, said similar fasts would be staged all over the country, including West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat.
