Meet on thermal project inconclusive
Manipal, Nov 13 (UNI) The meeting convened under the instructions of Chief Minister here today to discuss the issue of proposed coal based thermal power project in this district failed to come to any conclusion on the whether the project should come up or not.
The meeting chaired by the Medical Education Minister V S Acharya, who is also the District in-charge Minister was attended by Bharatlal Meena, Managing Director of Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL), Sri Visvesha Thirtha Swamiji of Udupi Pejavar mutt, Udupi MP Ms Manorama Madhwaraj, MLAs Raghupathy Bhat and Lalaji R Mendon and members from Nagarjuna Vidyut Stavara Virodhi Samiti.
Winding up the meeting Dr Acharya announced that all the delibrations and the views expressed by the speakers would be submitted to the Chief Minister. Declining to make any committment on whether he would recommend to shift the plant to elsewhere, he said that he had been asked by the Chief Minister to conduct the meeting and submit the report and it was upto the Chief Minister to take any decision.
The meeting had been called due to widespread agitation over establishment of a coal based power project by private sector Nagarjuna Power Corporation. Officials of the Corporation were also present in the meeting to clarify about the safety measures to be taken up in view of the apprehension by the protestors.
