Guru Harkrishan school wins Nehru Junior title

New Delhi, Nov 13 (UNI) Satish Kumar's last-gasp goal helped local favourite Guru Harkrishan Public School, Punjabi Bagh pip Town High School, Sundergarh (Orissa) 3-2 and lift the title after a pulsating final in the 35th Nehru Junior Hockey Tournament here today.

For the winners, who were held to a 1-1 draw at half time, the scorers were Laxmi Shankar Yadav (7th minute), Sajjan Singh (61st) and Satish Kumar (69th), while Dharamdas Vengra (6th) and Deepak Kullu (67th) sounded the board for the Orissa side.

Dharamdas' early strike saw the Orissa side move one-up but the joy proved shortlived as Laxmi Shankar converted a penalty corner in the next minute to draw parity and the scorelined 1-1 at half time.

The second session was initially a mundane affair before Sajjan scored from a penalty corner to put the local side ahead. But the spirited Orissa boys took just six minutes to equalise and then Satish Kumar's brilliant field goal in the dying minutes sealed the fate of the match in favour of Delhi school.

Earlier, Government Model High School, Chandigarh beat Union Academy Senior Secondary School, Delhi 4-2 to finish third in the tournament.

Simrandeep Singh scored a brace for the winners, while Rupinder Pal Singh and Ranjodh Singh chipped in with one goal apiece.

For the losers, Ashok Soni and Ashok Kumar reduced the margin.
