Five rupees increase in sugarcane prices in Haryana

Chandigarh, Nov 13 (UNI) Sugar mills in Haryana will pay Rs 5 per quintal more for mid and late maturing varieties of sugarcane purchased in the forthcoming crushing season, Agriculture Minister Harmohinder Singh Chatha said here today.

The early variety would be purchased at Rs 138 per quintal, mid maturing at Rs 128 per quintal and late maturing at Rs 126 by all Sugar Mills of Cooperative as well as sugar mills in the private sector.

Mr Chatha said in this way, an additional amount of Rs 30 crores would be paid to the cane growers by all the sugar mills in the state during the crushing season. Haryana was giving the highest price to its cane growers in the country, he said.

The total area covered under sugarcane during the year 2006-07 was about 1.57 lakh hectares out of which 24,312 hectares was under early maturing varieties, 10,4424 hectares under mid maturing varieties and 27,823 hectares under late maturing varieties.
