Western Union opens new agent location in India

New York, Nov 12 (UNI) Western Union, one of the leading money transfer companies of the world, has opened its 36,000th agent location in India at a ceremony held at the consulate here.

The remittance service to India is an extremely competitive business with approximately 22 billion dollars being transferred to India this year alone, Western Union Senior Vice President (Marketing) Tom McDermott said at the luncheon.

In India, Western Union operates through 8,500 post offices of India Post, with which it has a partnership since April 2001.

''Having an agent representative like India Post, with an extensive network fo 1,56,000 post offices, allows Western Union to serve our customers even in remote corners of this vast country,'' Mr McDermott added.

The company offers remittance services in English, Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, Telugu, Gujarati, Malayalam and Konkani.

''Having an extensive network of Western Union agents in India is absolutely critical to serving the needs of Indians living across the subcontinent,'' India Post representative Prasanta Swain said.
