Karimnagar, Andhra Pradesh, Nov 12 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy today said the AICC President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi was keen on the development of the backward Telangana region.

Addressing a largely attended public meeting in Sircilla in this district, kicking off Congress party's election campaign for the Karimnagar Lok Sabha by-election caused by the resignation of Telangana Rashtra Samiti Chief and former Union Labour Minister K Chandrasekhara Rao, he said his Government was committed to the development of the Telangana region.

Dr Reddy said works on the flood-flow canal and Yellampalli projects were already progressing and tenders for the Mid-Manair project have already been called.

He said the government had given adequate compensation to those who lost lands under the flood-flow canal and Yellampalli project and assured the people of the 13 villages that would be submerged under Mid-Manair project would get more compensation than they expected.

The Chief Minister assured the Mid-Manair project would be completed within a year-and-a-half or two. He also assured the people of the constituency that Godavari water would be lifted to the Upper Manair dam from the Mid-Manair dam to provide irrigation facility for 15,000 acres of parched land in the district.

He said he was aware of the problems of Sircilla and Gambhirraopet areas in the district and would attend to them.
