India demonstrated national unity centuries ago: Minister

Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 12 (UNI) Union Minister of State for Planning M V Rajasekharan today said while many western countries talked about the importance of national integration, India had already demonstrated it centuries ago.

Inaugurating a seminar on National Integration and presentation of the Rajiv Gandhi National Award, he said India had welcomed Arabs and Christians to the country and extended all possible helps for their settlement and business.

Pointing out that there had about 49 civilisations existed in the world in the Christian Era, he said majority of other civilisations in Rome, Greek and other nations had vanished.

''However, our civilisation, is vibrant, still live with dynamism,'' he said and pointed out ''the spiritual tolerance is the hallmark of the civilisation.'' India's tolerance to other civilisations, good relations with other religions had welcomed the world with open hands, he added.

Pointing out the achievements of the country in the field of Information Technology, he said quite some years back the country had to wait other nations like the USA and UK to get technical and scientific knowledge. However, the situation had changed completed and other nations were requesting our support in the field, he added.

Lauding the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's efforts to lead the country to the present status in IT, he said now the country was marching ahead over other nations in the field.

Later he presented the Rajiv Gandhi National Award to Sandhimadmom Radhakrishnan, Chairman Sandhimadom Agro Farm Trust, Rajesh Nambiar, Chairman, Society for Information Technology Development and Ms Divya Menon State Co-ordinator, Desiya Vanthia Sevak Samaj Trust.

Kerala Finance Minister T M Thomas Isaac presided over the function.

The seminar was organised by Rajiv Gandhi Institute for contemporary studies.
