Chennai, Nov 12: Tension prevailed at the Anna International Airport here last night, following an e-mail message received by an Internet centre at the United States threatening that flights from Indian destinations proceeding to the US and European countries would be hijacked.

Airport sources said the e-mail threat was received by the US- based internet centre, at 2000 hrs IST, in which the US authorities alerted the matter to the US premier intelligence agency-- Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). In turn, it sounded red alert to Intelligence Bureau (IB).

The sources said the IB had alerted all the Indian airports especailly Chennai, Delhi and Mumbai which were operating direct flights to the US and European Countries. The security measures were tightened further.

All the passengers and cargo meant for Chennai-Frankfurt Lufthansa flight, Chennai-Paris Air France flight and Chennai -London British Airways flight were screened thrice before boarding.

The sources said since the e-mailer did not mention the 'date of hijaking', Bureau of Civil Aviation Security, CISF and local police would continue the security drill, until further orders.
