New Delhi, Nov 11: National Union of Journalists (India) today demanded that no news agency should be allowed to pass into the control of any individuals, business enterprises or the government affecting its basic independent character.

Expressing "grave concern" over the sale of a majority stake in United News of India (UNI) to a media group, NUJ said in a statement that it was not a question of who owns the news agency but whether a news agency of national importance can be run in public interest as a private concern.

The Union Council of NUJ (India), which met at Chittorgarh recently, had adopted a resolution demanding that the interests of the workers of the news agency were not hampered by any takeover.

The National Council had stressed that the basic character of UNI should not be altered, said NUJ (India) president Dr N K Trikha.

The union has expressed its solidarity with the UNI employees agitating under the banner of the Joint Action Committee.

The new management should refrain from changing the service conditions of the employees or resorting to retrenchment, Dr Trikha said.

He also demanded that all "vindictive steps" taken against employees should be stopped and transfer orders withdrawn immediately.

He said it was "unfortunate" that the government had not so far intervened in this "serious issue".
