Kalam unveils World Heritage plaque at Champaner

Champaner, Panchamahals dist, Nov 11 (UNI) President A P J Abdul Kalam today unveiled the World Heritage plaque here at the Champaner-Pavagadh which has been declared as a heritage site by UNESCO.

The function of unveiling the plaque was conducted in front of the Jamia masjid built in the 15th century. He also went around the Jamia masjid site.

The masjid is a fine blend of Islamic and Hindu architecture with two imposing minarets at the entrance of the masjid. The President was accompanied by Gujarat Governor Nawal Kishore Sharma, Chief Minister Narendra Modi and Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) Director-General Babu Rajiv.

During his brief address, the President said he hoped the Champaner-Pavagadh medieval ruined city of the 15th century could be turned into a tourist paradise. It is also a beautiful place for historians, tourists and researchers, he said.

He congratulated the ASI as well as the Heritage Trust for having taken great pains to preserve the monuments in the Champaner-Pavagadh site.

He also visited an exhibition jointly organised by the Archaeological Survey of India and Heritage Trust(an NGO).

This NGO has strived relentlessly for the conservation and development of the Champaner-Pavagadh site.
