Jaya objects to replacement of'Thirukkural' couplets in buses

Chennai, Nov 11 (UNI) AIADMK General Secretary J Jayalalithaa today strongly objected to the alleged replacement of 'Thirukkural,' couplets written by sage-poet Thiruvalluvar, with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi's quotes in state transport corporation buses.

In a statement here, she said the couplets were displayed in buses only to enable people, particularly students, to read them and mould their lives accordingly.

She said the attempt to replace the couplets, which transcend time, with Mr Karunanidhi's quotes would amount to belittling not only Thiruvalluvar but also the entire Tamil community.

''It will not augur well for the five-time Chief Minister,'' she added.

Ms Jayalalithaa warned her party would launch an agitation if the couplets were not retained in all state-run buses.
