Madurai, Nov 11 (UNI) Reiterating that the Tamil Nadu Government will provide free Colour TV sets to all households with ration card, DMK strongman and State Local Administration Minister M K Stalin today said the populist programmes being launched have the stamp of popular mandate.

Launching the Government's new unemployment dole programme in the district here this evening, he said the public need not harbour any doubt about his announcement in this regard made during the campaign for the Assembly by-election in the city last month.

Extending the scheme to cover all ration card holders was to dispense with discrimination among the beneficiaries, he clarified adding that during enumeration at many places, people had attempted to conceal their old TV sets to avail the benefit.

The Minister, who earlier in the day distributed free TV sets at a Samathuvapuram (all community colony) in nearby Sakkimangalam, said 30000 free colour TV sets had been distributed so far, since October two. Initially, the programme was implemented in Samathuvapurams, leprosy homes and homes for the destitute and some tribal pockets in the Nilgiris, which received electricity to facilitate the launch of this programme.

The rationale for the unemployment dole, Mr Stalin explained was to help those seeking jobs even five years after having registered with the employment exchange, to meet the expenses for appearing in competitive examinations. In this district, the benefit is being extended to 11047 unemployed of the total 100912 registered with the employment exchange.

On the Free Gas Stove scheme, the minister assured that it would be launched in January next coinciding with the Festival of Tamils, Pongal. In an attempt to counter the populist image of the Government, he said industrialists from outside were making a beeline to the State to set up their ventures.

The Government had not lost sight of industrialisation and it was a feather in it is cap that renowned MNCs had invested in crore in the last six months, he added.

Land deeds to 917 beneficiaries, in the name of women, were handed over under the two acre land for the landless scheme on the occasion, besides assistance to women SHGs. A total of Rs 3.27 crore worth assistance was distributed at the function.

Earlier, Mr Stalin, who opened a Rs ten lakh overhead tank at suburban Naganakulam, visited the Rs 1.22 crore Golden Jubilee SHG Training Centre under construction there.
