Guru Ki Dhab, Faridkot, Nov 11 (UNI) The ''Vikas Yatra' of Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh today steached this remote town in the Akali stronghold 06 Malwa belt, where he was greeted by the rural populace led by the local Congress leadership.

Though the central Congress leader from this region, ex-MP from Faridkot Jagmeet Singh Brar, was conspicuous by his absence from the chief minister's show, the cavalcade got a tremedous response from the local villagers.

Capt Singh said on the occasion that he was elated to see thousands of people coming out their homes to greet him and his 'vikas yatra' on both sides of the road.

He said that in his political career spanning over 37 years he had not seen such a tremendous response from the masses especially for the ruling party in the last phase of its regime. He said that the participation of men in such events was a common phenomenon but when women came out of their houses and stood on the roof tops to welcome the 'yatra' it indicated the acceptance of the policies and programme of the present Congress regime.

Addressing media persons on the start of the Punjab Vikas Yatra (PVY) on the fourth day from here, Capt Singh today announced that 2700 km of water courses in the districts of Moga, Mansa, Bathinda, Muktsar, Faridkot, Ferozepur, Ludhiana, Patiala and Sangrur would be brick lined at a cost of Rs 300 crore in a phased manner.

He immediately released Rs 100 crore for this gigantic project.

On the rural indebtedness, Capt Singh reiterated that Punjab could not be compared with Vidharba as the nature and composition of loan was entirely different from those four states which had been included in the financial package of rural indebtedness by the Centre.

He said the Punjab government was committed to bail out small farmers and that he was in constant touch with the Union government to devise a viable solution because the settlement of loans provided by commercial banks could only be done by the Centre.

Capt Singh was accompanied by Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Shamsher Singh Dullo and the ministerial colleaaagues inlcuding Jagmohan Singh Kang, Mohinder Singh Kay Pee, Ramesh Dogra and Ms Gurkanwal Singh.
