Machilipatnam, Nov 11: The Machilipatnam unit of Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) has come out with an innovative technological system called 'Vehicle Vision Thermal Imager'(VVTI), which would enable army personnel to move their vehicles at nightime without switching on the head lights.

A spokesperson of the BEL told sources the VVIT, in built with a blometric detector of 384x288 pixels, can detect and process the images to make it available on a LCD.

The VVIT can be mounted on top of a car, truck or even in front of the vehicle. The driver can manoeuvre the vehicle by viewing the LCD mounted on the dashboard or at the top of the wind shield.

The system operates on the principals of thermal activity, the spokesman said, adding it verifies the heat radiated from every different object, in the form of electromagnetic waves, whose wave-length falls in the Infra-Red (IR) region.

The temperature difference between the object and its background defines the presence or absence of the object. If the difference is zero, no object will be detected by the Thermal Imager.

But in all practical cases, a modest temperature difference exists to detect the object. The smaller the possible difference detected, the better the system's performance, he added.
